Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing in Coquitlam: Projects Completed in 2021-2022

Coquitlam (/kˈkwɪtləm/ koh-KWIT-ləm) is a city in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada. Mainly suburban, Coquitlam is the sixth-largest city in the province, with a population of 139,284 in 2016, and one of the 21 municipalities comprising Metro Vancouver. The mayor is Richard Stewart. Simon Fraser explored the region in 1808, encountering the indigenous peoples

Coquitlam is situated some 10 to 15 km (6.2 to 9.3 mi) east of Vancouver, where the Coquitlam River connects with the Fraser River and extends northeast along the Pitt River toward the Coquitlam and Pitt lakes. Coquitlam borders Burnaby and Port Moody to the west, New Westminster to the southwest, and Port Coquitlam to the southeast. Burke Mountain, Eagle Ridge, and 1,583 m (5,194 ft) tall Coquitlam Mountain form the northern boundary of the city.

When we’re re-painting kitchen cabinets in Coquitlam we face the same issues as when we refinish cabinets in Vancouver.

Or when we’re cabinet painting Burnaby, cabinet painting North Vancouver, cabinet painting Richmond, cabinet painting Surrey or refinishing kitchen cabinets in Delta.

One challenge is that a lot of times the cabinets are being refinished while other trades are doing things such as replacing countertops, backsplashes, popcorn removal and new floors.

“Whats the best time to do the cabinet painting Rick?”

we are asked numerous times a year.

The answer is simple. Get us in asap to do the uninstall. We will then need the cabinetry in our shop for 2-3 weeks. Those 3 weeks are a great time to arrange to have all the other things done.

If the rest of the renos are not complete one of the best and safest ways to protect your investment in your cabinets is to simply have us wait until the dust has settled and all the trades are done. We then do the install and any touch ups on the fixed pieces that we may or may not have already painted.

The big take-away though is to keep the cabinets out of harms way. Much smarter to have them completed, cured, bubble wrapped and sitting safe in the corner of our shop than to hastily have them installed while still in full ‘reno mode’ and put them in harms way.

Clean in Canyon Springs

“I really need help with this colour selection Rick” my customer stated with one day left until she was gone for 6 weeks on vacation.

“Least I didn’t leave it until the last minute” she joked nervously.

“You’ve been at it a while now.  I feel like you’re getting to where you need to be to pull the trigger on this selection” I said encouragingly.

“There are too many choices” she said.

“Well, you have grays and earth tones so go with a greige if you don’t mind darker cabinets that compliment both grays and beige or Oxford White if you want to stay off white while picking up the grays in your kitchen.

“So, are you *telling* me to go with Oxford White Rick”?

“Do I have “sucker” written across my forehead?” I smiled.

“The final decision rests with you Lisa. I’m just stating an objective fact. That Oxford White has a hint of gray to it so if the goal is to ‘pick up’ the grays in your kitchen then Oxford White might be something to consider”.

“You’re not going let me pin you down on this are you Rick?” she said.

“I’d love to be pinned down by you Lisa.  Just not about colour”.

Lisa: “hahahahahahahah”

Central Coquitlam Epoxy

Scene from a central Coquitlam epoxy refinishing job.  This was pretty straight forward as we were asked to simply match the walls which were Dove White from Benjamin Moore.

Usual routine with Coquitlam’s best husband and wife cabinet painting team spinning their magic yet again.

In case you don’t know the routine it goes like this.

Show up, uninstall in 3 hours and straight to the shop with all doors and drawers.

Cabinets then scrubbed irrespective of how clean they are.  Then the orbital sander to all surfaces.

Vacuum and or compressed air to get rid of the dust then onto spray priming bith BIN shelac based primer /sealer.

Sanding all surfaces then onto  spray painting two top coats.  All cabinets sprayed one by one in a horizontal position to allow maximum amount of spraying with no sagging.

Cabinets the left to cure then wrapped in foam to then be safely transported to customers house for the installation.

The two or thee days leading up to the install we will be painting the on-site fixed pieces.  eg…boxes, side panels, kicks…etc..

Laquer at Harbour Place

So many Benjamin Moore whites to choose from.

You won’t be surprised that Benjamin Moore’s White Dove, Decorator’s White, Cloud White & Chantilly Lace are the most popular white paint colors in their collections.

They are all trending in 2022 but are also timeless colourless white paint colours.

This Coquitlam kitchen (@Harbour Place) we did is Chantilly Lace.  OC-65 is as delicate as the lace it was named after.

Light Reflectance Value

Light Reflectance Value LRV, or Light Reflectance Value, is a measurement commonly used by design professionals—such as architects and interior designers—that expresses the percentage of light reflected from a surface.
LRVs range from 0-100, with 100 being pure white and 0 being absolute black.  Chantilly Lace has a LRV of 92.2
We love our lacquers at Coquitlam Cabinet Painters.   One reason is that when the hard film cures, it rubs out well; and its slightly amber color enhances both light and dark woods with a warm, attractive patina.
Also, because it is an evaporative finish, each new coat of lacquer blends into all the previous coats, making it easy to repair.

Upper Eagle Ridge

Rick: “Don’t worry; the black glossy cabinet paint you pick will compliment the natural wood you have in your countertop” I said confidently since this was my 2000+ rodeo.

Customer: “CC-40 Cloud White from Benjamin Moore isn’t going to be suitable this time around, will it?”

Rick:  “Could work but since you’re on the fence why not just go for something sexy and alluring”

“Black has a ton of positive attributes” I went on.

Positive Associations

For some, black glossh cabinets evokes positive associations with this color, including attractiveness and elegance.

The color oozes sophistication. That’s why so many people choose to don black clothing when attending a fancy event.

It’s also why high-end brands like Tiffany & Co. and Chanel utilize black in their logos.

When it comes to high society, the color black has long been associated with power. From priests to judges, tuxedos to credit cards. And let’s not forget about Steve Jobs.

River Springs Radiance

Customer:  “I’ts a coin toss between Oxford White, Chantilly Lace or Simply White Rick.  Any help with this Rick?”

Rick:  “Well, the Oxford has a gray undertone and wouldn’t be suitable in your kitchen so that leaves Chantilly and Simply…oh ya, and Cloud White of course to pick up the floor and backsplash colour.

Rick:  “Do you want a white, white or a white with a slight yellow undertone?” I asked.

Customer:  “Not yellow.  I don’t want a banana look.”

Rick:  “Cloud white has only a single shot of yellow in it per gallon so it’s very understated”

Customer:  “Ohh, right.   Will my cabinets look yellow though if you use Simply?”

Rick:  Although Simply White is definitely warmer than other white paints and has a yellow undertone, it will not look yellow on your cabinets. You may notice a *hint* of yellow at times, depending on the lighting in your room.

Customer:  “I’m OK with a hint.  Simply White it is then”.

Rick:  “You sure?”

Customer:  “No, not sure at all.  Let’s go with Cloud White instead…lol”

Rick:  “Giddy up on the cloud then”

Staining @ New Horizons

At Coquitlam kitchen cabinet painting and refinishing we stain 5-10 full kitchens every year for 15 years straight.

Cabinets with old or worn finish can look sad and unappealing. No worries though as they can be to look new again without the need for chemical stripping or heavy sanding.

Hey, if you feel brave enough and have some time on your hands feel free to trying staining the cabinets yourself.  It’s fun!

Just get the existing clear coat off first.  (not so fun) ;>

Wood stain is available in a variety of formulas, such as water borne and oil based.

You can apply the stain then put a few clear coats on top or a neat trick is to combine your choice of stain with polyurethane which provides both a stained look AND the durable “top clear coat”.

If you’re using oil-based stain be sure to wear latex gloves and have some paint thinner handy. Ideally, the latex gloves keeps you protected from all the paint and chemicals so get a few pairs to be safe.

The Colour Grey

In color psychology, grey represents neutrality and balance. Its color meaning likely comes from being the shade between white and black. However, grey does carry some negative connotations, particularly when it comes to depression and loss. Its absence of color makes it dull. Grey can be used for font color, headers, graphics, and even products to appeal to a mass audience.

Apple is an example of a brand who uses the color grey in their branding. After all, many of their laptops are in a grey or silver-tone as its neutral color doesn’t put anyone off. On their website, they use the color grey for their header to contrast against a white logo. However, throughout their branding, you’ll see a balance between white, black and grey used which can help maintain a clean, neutral look.

Why We Love Coquitlam

Coquitlam’s geographic shape can be thought of as a tilted hourglass, with two larger parcels of land with a smaller central section connecting them.

Southwest Coquitlam comprises the original core of the city, with Maillardville and Fraser River industrial sector giving way to the large residential areas of Austin Heights, colloquially referred to as “The Bump”due to its high and flat plateau topography.

These older residences, with larger property dimensions, are increasingly being torn down and replaced with newer and larger homes. The Poirier Street area was the city’s original recreational centre with the Coquitlam Sports Centre, Chimo Aquatic and Fitness Centre, and sports fields located there, while City Hall was previously located further south in Maillardville.
